I'm definitely guilty of not trying to take photos because of how difficult it has become. We're in the 12-24 months time frame, and I can't even get them to stay still for 10 seconds (lucky you!). But I like the advice that I have to keep at it so they'll get used to the camera. I should have plenty of opportunities next month.

And I think I might be guilty of cutting off limbs (again, hard to get the whole body when the subject is in constant motion). Will have to work on that too.

Thanks so much for the tips. It seems I had a lot to learn!

Mommy, Esq - the girls started out grabbing the video camera and now they love to stand behind it and watch the screen. They do like taking pictures with my camera (I hold it and they just press the button) - I sometimes bribe them with that as well.

We are also in the dreaded phase and worse than constant motion and looking away is the "grabbing" for the video recorder or camera. It's driving me crazy! It's normally my little guy so maybe your girls don't do the same thing but he doesn't understand no, so I have to put it away when he grabs for it - cutting short any photo session.

We just finished putting together our cards, and actually, the pictures of our 13 moth olds running in different directions were winners! It sort of told the story of dealing with two young toddlers. Of course we got cute ones of them individually, but to try and capture two standing still was pretty much impossible.

I definitely agree that 12-24 months is the hardest period to get them in a picture together.

Definitely like the tip for not cropping limbs at weird places. I say either get the whole kid, or get really close up.

Peekaboo was a good game (at least when they were little) to get them to look at me and smile while I was taking the picture. Just hide behind the camera, and BOO! :-)

Another reason to make the picture-taking a habit is because, otherwise, you run the risk of less-than-ideal circumstances on your designated photo-taking day. I like the idea of taking a picture right after Thanksgiving for holiday cards, but last year it just ended up being bad lighting and squirmy kids. This year, I've got bad weather and H1N1. Glad I had an informal photo shoot in the leaves on a nice day a few weeks ago.

I also found that I need to get it out of my head that it has to be a single group shot. All of the photo-card-printing sites have lots of options to put multiple pictures on one card. Much easier than trying to get a whole bunch of people (and toddlers) looking in the same place at the same time.

Fantastic post! Loved all the tips...unfortunately I'm in the dreaded 12-24 months age right now with our girls but can't wait to have them pose for us. I'm contemplating getting a better camera in order to capture all the magic moments. We tend to miss them waiting for our camera to catch up.
