My 3-year-old son loved to watch the garbage trucks, delivery trucks, painting crews, etc at work in the alley behind out house. It was always a great distraction when I needed a few minutes.

I also like to rotate toys out or save a few toys from Christmas and birthdays to bring out when we need a change.

My 2.5 year old twins get a great energy release from using a large air mattress as an indoor trampoline on bad weather days. It can really save us from a bad, grumpy day if we pull it out and let them jump to their heart's content. Also, couch cushions were a great trampoline for them when they were smaller...not to mention all the ways you can stack them, climb on them, scoot them around, etc.

Sunglasses are ALWAYS a hit at our house with our 18 m/o girls. I never thought of connect 4 - I always tell my older daughter to keep it away from her sisters (I am afraid they'll chow down on the checkers) but it makes such good sense for their fine motor skills.
The thing that saves us on indoor days is pulling the cushions from the couch (we have a futon mattress at the moment that we lay out on the floor) and they go to town jumping and tumbling and rolling around on it. But couch cushions make great forts! They also like to play "instruments" like tupperware or pot drums. It's loud, but I've learned to block it out and they have a blast making up their own band.
